Camp is Crazy

Camp is crazy. We wake up when the birds first start singing and the sun shines through the windows. Before we have even made it to our staff devotionals (before the kids are allowed out of bed), the rhythmic breathing of the kids come to an end, and they are getting wound up. It is reminiscent of a sleepover…a really BIG sleepover.

Every kid has needs to be seen to and the counselors are trying to quietly head up to the lodge. The kitchen staff puts down their stirring spoons to join into the morning prayer group. We cover all the needs: The kid’s medical needs, games for the afternoon, last minute schedule adjustments...courtesy of the weatherman, and many more things.

As someone who has served over a dozen weeks of Christian summer camps, I have seen it all. Until last year. That was the year that things went from crazy to “God help us out of this.” That was the summer our director had to leave on an emergency! The one person who is there is watch all the odds and ends so the rest of us can focus on our small part leaves us (oh yeah...she was also the head cook!). But when hope appears to fade, that is what God comes in to show us what He can do.

Even before camp He was planning for this test. Our regular pastor had to step out last minute, so our replacement for the week came with his whole family. The kids dissolved into camper life and the pastor took his place in the pulpit and the classroom. His wife, who was just going to fill in “somewhere” ending up knowing a lot about line cooking. Alas, we had a new head cook to organize the week.

As for our director, it turns out that one of our counselors has been taking some training on how to direct camps. She got a trial by fire filling in for our missing director, and I also had a fairly minor role that week, so I also filled in for the gaps that were made in directing, planing, cooking, and crowd control. God showed us that He could pull things together and that He is the real director of camp.

We can learn from this chaos that God is always in control. Even though it was the craziest week of summer camp I had ever seen, God had blessed us all with camaraderie, patients, and a lesson that He can make anything run smoothly when we place our trust in Him.

Joash's Influences

The upcoming book will teach us about our influences.

If you feel like your life in Christ is stagnent, ask yourself if you are following God or following men.

Stay tuned for more information about Joash's Influences. We will announce a beta read in the near future and hope to have the book out in time for Christmas.

This is the third book in the Kings of All Creation series following Josiah's Sanctification and Hezekiah's Prayer.

I AM not amused
